MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Graduate of an accredited nursing program with license to practice as a registered nurse (preferred) or LPN in Tennessee
  2. Current CPR/BLS certification
  3. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  4. Must be able to perform the essential functions and meet the physical demands and other criteria listed herein.
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

REPORTS TO            Supervisor of Student Services

 

JOB GOAL                To provide needed healthcare services to students.

 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Plan school health program, in cooperation with medical authority and administrative school personnel.
  2. Participate in medical examinations and review findings to evaluate health status of students and progress of program.
  3. Instruct classes in subjects such as child care, first aid, infectious diseases, and universal precautions.
  4. Establish nursing policies to meet emergencies.
  5. Cooperate with other school personnel in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of students.
  6. Administer medication for students per physicians’ instructions.
  7. Provide basic first aid and health care.
  8. Maintain accurate student health records. Follow prescribed procedures relative to recording of administration of medications.
  9. Notify parents of serious injuries or illness. 
  10. Maintain a file of emergency telephone numbers or other ways to contact those in parental authority.
  11. Counsel students in good health habits and other health care related areas.
  12. May assist in program for care of disabled students.
  13. Provide supervision for sick or injured students until they are placed under their parents’ care.
  14. Collect and maintain data documenting special health considerations/conditions of all students and communicates this information with school administration and staff systematically and on a “need-to-know” basis.
  15. Report significant student injuries, accidents or illness trends to the principal.
  16. Assume responsibility for knowing and following the safety rules and proper procedures associated with the responsibilities of the job.
  17. Follow all board policies, school rules, and administrative regulations.
  18. Report to the principal when one knows or reasonably suspects a student’s health or welfare has been or appears to have been harmed as a result of abuse or neglect and reports to the Department of Children’s Services.
  19. Represent the school, school system, and community in a positive manner.
  20. Maintain confidentiality relative to student records and procedures.
  21. May assist in collection, maintenance, and follow-up activities relative to attendance data.
  22. May assist in student screening activities (i.e., hearing, vision, speech).
  23. Perform other work-related duties as requested when nursing/clinic responsibilities are not required.
